Course content / topics

Molecular biology techniques are commonly applied for the functional analysis of the developing as well as the differentiated nervous system. Such techniques rely on the application of knowledge derived from different scientific fields including genetics, biochemistry and cell biology. Knowledge of the basic principles of molecular biology experiments is therefore essential for the interpretation of molecular biology-related experiments published in literature, and a prerequisite to perform molecular biology experiments. The principles of different molecular biology-related techniques are explained in the context of experiments solving a neurobiological problem. The lecture covers different molecular biology tools including DNA analysis, mRNA-related techniques protein-related techniques for structural and functional analysis of proteins and the use of recombinant techniques to study the nervous system.
