Course content / topics

A genetic contribution to the aetiology is being recognized for a growing number of neurologic and psychiatric diseases. Genetic discoveries have lead in many cases, to new classifications of formerly heterogeneous diseases and have led to the elucidation of the molecular sequence of events that is crucial in the pathogenesis of these disorders. In addition, the increasing knowledge of neurogenetic diseases has also enhanced the understanding of normal neuronal function. During this course, basic principles of inheritance and variability of the human genome will be discussed, with special reference to disease relevant aspects such as penetrance, expressivity and epigenetics. This course complements the courses on Genetic and Molecular Basis of Neural Diseases I and II.
