Course content / topics

The lecture on molecular and cellular neuroscience will provide an introduction to the lower levels of neural function, genes, proteins and sub-cellular compartments. Topics include gene expression, protein transport and function, ion channels, ionotropic and metabotropic neurotransmitter receptors, intracellular signal transduction, axonal transport, neurotransmitters and neurotranmitter transporters. The lecture concludes with an introduction to the different types of neuroglial cells and their main functions. The molecules, processes and cell types discussed in this lecture are key players that determine the functioning of neuronal networks and, thus, represent 'basic knowledge' that every neuroscience student should have.

This basic lecture is ideal in conjunction with the neurophysiology lecture.
