Abstract: In recent years, voltammetric methods used in model organisms for the detection of important information-bearing molecules like dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine have been paired with modern machine learning methods to improve the speed and chemical specificity of the methodology. In this talk, we show how this same basic approach can be piggybacked onto standard clinical monitoring systems using stereo EEG electrodes to provide a new capacity for detecting sub-second fluctuations in monoamines in conscious humans. This innovation opens the door for equipping perceptual and cognitive tasks with concurrent monoamine monitoring. I will also discuss some important practicalities for these methods in terms of data sharing strategies.
