The research division „Translational Genomics of Neurodegenerative Diseases“ of Prof. Synofzik is currently
looking for a Master student with a special interest in RNA Biology and translational ASO research for a lab
rotation and subsequent Master Thesis.
Starting date: April/Mai 2026
About us:
Our research division focuses on genomics, pathophysiology and translational biomarker research as well as
treatment development in the field of neurodegenerative diseases, with a special focus on genetic ataxias, but
now also expanding to dementias and motor neuron diseases (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). A wide range of
molecular, protein biochemical and cell biological methods are applied in the lab (e.g. exome/genome/RNAseq
sequencing, qPCR, western blotting, Quanterix Simoa, Luminex, ASO development covering the full drug
development pipeline from bench to first-in-human bedside and back).
We offer:
We offer students to actively participate in a challenging interdisciplinary translational projects that involve
developing patient-customized splice modulation antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) for neurodegenerative
diseases.
The Project:
The projects include ASO efficacy and tolerability testing in patient-derived fibroblasts using a streamlined
platform for ASO development as well as toxicity studies based on Luminex, qPCR and fluorescence assays. You
will receive excellent training in cutting-edge molecular biology methods and assay development with a special
focus on translational aspects of pre-clinical research.
Your background:
• You are pursuing a Master’s degree in Biochemistry or a similar program, and you enjoy working
ambitiously on projects with a high degree of responsibility, independence, and academic ambition.
• Solid experience with western blotting, RT-PCR, qPCR and cell culture routines will be required.
Application:
If you are interested in this position, please send your full application within one PDF file including
• Short outline of your scientific background, motivation and experience.
• List of previously applied lab techniques.
• Curriculum vitae and transcript of records
